In the upper reaches of the Kariega River Valley, looking down at the hills and winding rivers below, rests Kariega Game Reserve. Located along the picturesque Garden Route, the 10,000ha reserve stretches over wondrous African wilderness and is home to an abundance of wildlife. Visitors are treated to vistas of forest and savannah grassland, all in a malaria-free area a mere 10min drive from the coast.
The coveted Big 5 are no stranger to this area: leopards lounge in the trees, lions return from hunts and mighty elephant herds slowly make their way across the plains. Other wildlife that can be seen in the reserve includes giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest and a variety of antelope. As night descends, nocturnal life begins to stir: hyena scour for prey while the hippos leave their watery realms to graze. Open game-drive vehicles bring man and wildlife face-to-face, leaving visitors in awe of the animals who call this vast tract of wilderness home.
The two rivers, Kariega and Bushman’s, lazily snake through the reserve attracting a variety of birdlife. Hear the distinctive cry of the African fish eagle resonate throughout the valley and watch the Goliath heron stand motionless in the shallows, scrutinising the water at his feet. A leisurely boat cruise or quiet paddle in a kayak brings visitors closer to these birds and others such as darter, flamingo and half-collared kingfisher.
