A Seasonal Guide to the Smoke That Thunders

Victoria Falls is a year-round wonder and the best time to visit depends on the version of the Falls you want: full-throttle spray and rainbows, Devil’s Pool, white-water rafting, or crisp, clear views for photography. Straddling Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Falls change dramatically through the year – shaped entirely by Zambezi River water levels, which determine not only what you see, but what you can do.

High Water Season (February to July)

Victoria Falls at Full Power

Peak flow usually builds in March and April, when the Zambezi spills over a vast basalt cliff in the world’s largest curtain of falling water. Expect constant thunder, towering spray, and rainbows that keep appearing as the light shifts.

Best for:

  • Maximum flow and pure spectacle
  • Rainbow photography (roughly 8am–2pm)
  • Scenic flights over the full curtain
  • Feeling the Falls at their most powerful

What to expect:

  • Heavy spray (you will get wet)
  • Reduced visibility from certain viewpoints at peak flow
  • Warm, mild days

April is often the sweet spot: full spectacle, slightly clearer views.

Low Water Season (August to January)

Geological Detail & Devil’s Pool

As the river drops, the rock face and gorge come into focus. By October and November, some sections narrow into cascades, trading roar for detail and revealing the Falls’ architecture. This is also when Devil’s Pool typically operates on the Zambian side: a

natural rock pool right on the edge.

Best for:

  • Devil’s Pool (typically mid-August to January)
  • White-water rafting (often best October–January)
  • Clear, panoramic photography with minimal spray
  • Sunset light on exposed cliffs and gorge walls

What to expect:

  • Hotter days in late spring/early summer
  • Less mist and more definition
  • A different kind of experience – quieter, sharper, more sculpted

Victoria Falls doesn’t “dry up” – the water simply concentrates into fewer channels.

Month-by-Month Highlights

January: rising water; fewer visitors

March–April: peak flow, biggest spray, rainbow season

May–June: still strong flow, improving clarity

July: transition month

August–September: clearer views; Devil’s Pool typically reopens

October: lowest levels; peak rafting conditions

November–December: storm build-up; moody skies

Zimbabwe vs Zambia: Which Side Is Better?

Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, and each side offers a different style of viewing. The “best” side depends on the season and what you want to do, which is why many guests choose to experience both.

Zimbabwe side

  • Classic, wide-angle viewpoints along the rainforest path
  • The strongest “full curtain” experience in high water, with sweeping, front-on views
  • Easy access to multiple lookout points for variety in angles and photos

Zambia side

  • Closer, more intimate perspectives – you feel the spray and scale up close
  • Devil’s Pool access in low water (conditions allowing)
  • Great for combining Falls views with river activities on the Zambezi

Many guests do both, using the KAZA UniVisa where applicable for easier border-hopping.

Best Time for Specific Experiences

  • Full-flow drama: March–April
  • Devil’s Pool: mid-August–January
  • White-water rafting: August–January (often best October)
  • Rainbow photography: March–June
  • Fewer visitors: January–February
  • Balanced conditions: April and September

How Many Days Do You Need?

We recommend three nights to experience: both sides of the Falls, a scenic flight, a Zambezi sunset cruise, and one seasonal hero experience (Devil’s Pool or rafting).

Victoria Falls also pairs perfectly with safari, especially Chobe National Park, Hwange, and the Okavango Delta.
