Victoria Falls is a year-round wonder and the best time to visit depends on the version of the Falls you want: full-throttle spray and rainbows, Devil’s Pool, white-water rafting, or crisp, clear views for photography. Straddling Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Falls change dramatically through the year – shaped entirely by Zambezi River water levels, which determine not only what you see, but what you can do.
Victoria Falls at Full Power
Peak flow usually builds in March and April, when the Zambezi spills over a vast basalt cliff in the world’s largest curtain of falling water. Expect constant thunder, towering spray, and rainbows that keep appearing as the light shifts.
Best for:
What to expect:
April is often the sweet spot: full spectacle, slightly clearer views.
Geological Detail & Devil’s Pool
As the river drops, the rock face and gorge come into focus. By October and November, some sections narrow into cascades, trading roar for detail and revealing the Falls’ architecture. This is also when Devil’s Pool typically operates on the Zambian side: a
natural rock pool right on the edge.
Best for:
What to expect:
Victoria Falls doesn’t “dry up” – the water simply concentrates into fewer channels.
January: rising water; fewer visitors
March–April: peak flow, biggest spray, rainbow season
May–June: still strong flow, improving clarity
July: transition month
August–September: clearer views; Devil’s Pool typically reopens
October: lowest levels; peak rafting conditions
November–December: storm build-up; moody skies
Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, and each side offers a different style of viewing. The “best” side depends on the season and what you want to do, which is why many guests choose to experience both.
Many guests do both, using the KAZA UniVisa where applicable for easier border-hopping.
We recommend three nights to experience: both sides of the Falls, a scenic flight, a Zambezi sunset cruise, and one seasonal hero experience (Devil’s Pool or rafting).
Victoria Falls also pairs perfectly with safari, especially Chobe National Park, Hwange, and the Okavango Delta.
Victoria Falls is never the same twice. Tell us what you want more of – spray-and-thunder, edge-of-the-world adrenaline, or clean photographic views – and we’ll match your travel window to the experience, then connect it seamlessly with safari.
