A lake atop the Kenyan Rift Valley

Lake Naivasha can be found sprawled across the highest elevation point of the Kenyan Rift Valley. Spanning an area of 13,900ha with a surrounding swamp, this freshwater lake north of Nairobi is home to wallowing hippo pods, a plethora of birdlife, and other game. The lake is under two hours away from Nairobi and close to other fascinating points of interest such as Hell’s Gate National Park and Mount Longonot.

The gradually inclining slopes of Mount Longonot cradle the crater of a stratovolcano whose hollow floor is carpeted in a green forest and interjected by small steam vents here and there. Zebra, buffalo, giraffe, and hartebeest graze along its rim and floor while seldom-seen leopard conceal themselves behind dense foliage. The Hell’s Gate National Park is also a short drive from Lake Naivasha and guests can walk along the surface of an ancient tributary to a prehistoric lake flanked by looming cliffs on either side.

This area is well-known for its superb hiking and nature trails, day and night game drives, cycling, and camping. Its proximity to Nairobi makes it an easy add-on to your Kenyan itinerary, either for a day trip or a few overnight stops at the various lodges and camps in the vicinity.
