+27 21 469 2600Cradled between the city and the V&A Waterfront, De Waterkant is a cultural urban refuge. Its village-like charm is reflected in its cobbled streets lined with colourful and quaint semidetached cottages that have been preserved from the 1760’s. The suburb draws inspiration from European culture and has an added Capetonian flair, populated with restaurants, art galleries, salsa clubs and cafes.
Visitors can enjoy local wines at Chenin Restaurant and Wine Bar alongside the picturesque piazza fountain, or on the hanging terrace overlooking the ocean. For a taste of Paris in spring, La Petite Tart showers visitors in deliciously decadent delights. The area’s nightlife spills out onto Long Street with its array of pubs and clubs where smoke veils cigar lounges, techno beats reverberate off nightclub walls and cocktail bar specials can be read from the comfort of sunken leather couches.
Among the humming present is a touch of the sombre past. The Prestwich Memorial and Memorial Gardens honour the forgotten slaves executed and buried in unmarked graves in the 1700s and interpretive displays showcase the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the Western Cape. Forming part of St Andrew’s Square, the area also displays artworks and sculptures.
