How to Travel to the Greater Kruger Region
Getting to Kruger National Park is easier than you think. Most international arrivals connect through Johannesburg, then it’s a quick flight into the Greater Kruger. Within 60–90 minutes, you could be touching down at a private bush airstrip or arriving at one of the region’s nearby airports.
The best route depends on your time, budget and where you’re staying – here’s how to choose.
The Fastest Way: Fly Direct to Your Safari Lodge
For uninterrupted travel, charter and shuttle flights from Johannesburg land directly at private lodge airstrips across Greater Kruger.
Flight time: ±90 minutes
Baggage: 20kg per person in soft-sided bags
Arrival: Ranger meet-and-greet at the airstrip
You step off the aircraft and straight into safari mode – no long transfers, no unnecessary stops. Charter flights are ideal for travellers prioritising time, comfort and a smooth start to their safari.
Regional Airports Serving Kruger
Three airports provide convenient access to different areas of the park and surrounding private reserves:
Skukuza Airport (SZK) – Inside Kruger National Park, ideal for central and southern lodges
Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) – Gateway to Timbavati, Thornybush and northern Greater Kruger
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP/KMIA) – Best for Sabi Sand and southern reserves
From touchdown, you’re either on a bush-bound road transfer or hopping onto a light aircraft for the final stretch into the wild.
Flight times:
- Johannesburg to Kruger: 60–90 minutes
- Cape Town to Kruger: ±2.5 hours
Private Road Transfers
If you’d rather stay on the ground, a private transfer from Johannesburg takes around 4–5 hours, depending on your lodge. It’s a great fit for families, anyone travelling with extra luggage, or guests who want to weave in scenic stops along Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route.
We don’t recommend driving at night, so transfers are planned for daylight arrivals.
Self-Drive to Kruger National Park
Self-driving offers flexibility, particularly if exploring beyond safari.
From Johannesburg: ±5 hours on well-maintained roads
From Cape Town: Flying is strongly recommended
Some routes take you through Mpumalanga’s dramatic escarpment viewpoints, like Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window – a scenic prelude to your safari.
Travelling Between Safari Lodges
Many guests combine multiple private reserves within Greater Kruger.
Charter flights between lodges: 20–40 minutes
Road transfers: 1–4 hours
Flying isn’t just the fastest way in – it’s your first game-viewing moment. From above, you see the braided rivers, open savannah and wildlife corridors that make this ecosystem so extraordinary.
Choosing the Right Travel Option
- Private charter flights: Fastest, more flexible, and fully exclusive
- Scheduled shuttle flights: Quick and efficient (shared, fixed safari routes)
- Scheduled commercial flights: Larger aircraft between major airports
- Private transfers: Comfortable overland journey with dedicated driver
- Self-drive: Maximum flexibility. Best for confident, independent travellers
