The Mother City’s guardian

The flat-topped Table Mountain is the Mother City’s guardian and its iconic landmark. As the south-easterly wind gathers strength, a tablecloth of clouds crowns the plateau and pours endlessly down its slopes. Shrouded with indigenous vegetation and home to humble critters, the mountain is deserving of much more than a quick cable car ride to the top.

The mountain forms part of Table Mountain National Park, which hosts the world’s smallest, yet most diverse floral kingdom, from ancient fynbos and grassy renosterveld, to Afromontane forest and the plants of the remaining wetland. A myriad of bird species frequent the area, as well as smaller mammals such as klipspringer, grysbok, and common duiker. Hike, climb, or even abseil the many faces of the mountain. The trails crisscross the summit and range from light strolls to rigorous hikes. Those not keen on the climb can opt for a comfortable ride in the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.

Reclining against the lower slopes is the cultural urban refuge of De Waterkant. The cobbled streets are lined with colourful semidetached cottages and reflect 1760s European culture combined with a Capetonian flair. The suburb features fabulous restaurants, inspiring art galleries, salsa clubs, and Parisian-inspired cafes.
