Pretoria is the de facto capital of South Africa and well worth a visit if you have the time. It is often called the 'Jacaranda City' because these trees paint the town purple during Spring. There are many historic sights such as the Voortrekker Monument which commemorates 'The Great Trek' - when the Afrikaners marched from Cape Town through the interior before founding the Republic in 1852. It also houses the Union Buildings which are the official seat of government and incorporate the President's Office.
