Roho ya Selous

Set on a secluded peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera, Roho ya Selous is located in the heart of Tanzania’s vast Nyerere National Park, one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. It’s a landscape characterised by rivers, floodplains and palm-fringed lakes where elephants, lions, giraffes and wild dogs still roam freely. From camp, sweeping views of the waterways reveal hippos grunting at dawn, kingfishers darting across the shallows and the golden light of sunset shimmering over the Rufiji River system.

In classic safari style, days at camp start with a morning game drive in an open 4x4, traversing some of Nyerere National Park’s most prolific wildlife areas. Alternatively, explore by boat, drifting quietly along the channels where crocodiles bask and African fish eagles hunt, or on a walking safari, revealing animal tracks and smaller creatures often overlooked. The birdlife is exceptional here, with over 400 recorded species. Between outings, cool off in the pool or relax in the shade of the lounge, where gentle breezes move through the canvas and slate-floored spaces.

The camp’s stretch-canvas tents, including a family unit, are spacious sanctuaries tucked into the trees. Each has its own en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, a private veranda and the innovative “Evening Breeze” cooling system above the bed – ensuring restful sleep even on warm nights. Shared spaces include an open-air dining area overlooking the lake, a bar glowing softly at sunset and a firepit where stories are shared under the stars. Roho ya Selous welcomes families with children aged five years and over.
