Pastoral charm along the Overberg

Those travelling away from Cape Town and over Sir Lowry’s Pass and the Hottentot-Holland Mountains are in for a treat! Along the Western Cape’s south coast, a seemingly endless expanse unfolds and gives way to the magnificent Overberg region. The road winds through sweeping hills, valleys, and rivers that are punctuated with lush orchards and farmland. With sights like these, travellers will be tempted to slow down and enjoy the tranquil vistas and charming towns of the area.

The undulating winelands and rolling orchards of Villiersdorp, Elgin Valley, and the picturesque town of Grabouw are sure to entice travellers to sample the fruity fare found in these parts. The Overberg’s reputation as the ‘bread basket’ of the Cape is evident in the golden fields surrounding the small town of Bot River, while the neighbouring town of Caledon is known for its casino and natural springs.

Flanked by two rivers and nestled in a nook of the Riviersonderend Mountains, Greyton is an outdoorsman’s paradise while the nearby town of Riviersonderend stands near the threshold of the Cape’s Eden: the Garden Route. The picturesque town of Swellendam oozes old-world charm – which is hardly surprising considering it is the third-oldest town in South Africa.
