The Highlands is an award-winning boutique camp set high on the forested slopes of Olmoti Crater, in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Its remote location offers a private wilderness experience while still being a short drive from the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of East Africa’s most famous safari destinations. From your domed suite, you enjoy sweeping views across rolling hills, volcanic peaks and forests.
A stay here combines classic crater-floor safari drives with a variety of unique activities and encounters. Hike up to the rim of Olmoti for the views or trek down into Empakaai Crater to witness the stunning display of thousands of pink flamingos gathered at the soda lake. Additionally, a visit to local Maasai communities offers authentic cultural encounters. Within the Ngorongoro Crater itself, expect to see elephants, buffalo, hartebeest, zebra, lion, hyena and sometimes even the rare black rhino.
Spend the night perched high in striking domed suites, each fitted with en-suite bathrooms, hot running water and in-room wood-burning stoves for chilly nights. One suite is specially designed for families, while the honeymoon suite includes an outdoor bath. Shared spaces include a warm central lounge dome and a spa with a sauna. Families with children aged five and above are welcome. The camp is open year-round, with access via Lake Manyara Airstrip, followed by a three-hour drive.
