Sabyinyo Lodge brings you into Rwanda’s gorilla country, where the Virunga Massif rises in misty folds and Volcanoes National Park protects one of Africa’s most treasured wildlife habitats. Set on a lush 16-hectare property near the national park headquarters, the lodge places you close to the start of the gorilla trekking experience while surrounding you with volcanic views, highland gardens and warm Rwandan character. As Rwanda’s first community-owned lodge, it also gives your stay a deeper purpose through conservation and local empowerment.
Gorilla trekking is the reason many travellers come, but Sabyinyo gives the whole experience a wider context. Treks begin from the nearby national park headquarters, leading you to the forested slopes where families of mountain gorillas feed, play and watch the world. Golden monkey trekking, guided birding and garden tours enhance your experience, while community encounters show how tourism here supports local livelihoods. Later, return for a massage, fireside conversation and Rwandan-inspired meals drawn from the lodge’s organic gardens.
Accommodation feels warm and characterful, with six stone cottages, two luxury suites and a family unit set among the highland greenery. After a day on the gorilla trails, you can return to generous sitting areas, crackling fireplaces, stylish en-suite bathrooms and sheltered verandas looking towards the volcanoes. The family unit offers two separate bedrooms and welcomes children of all ages, although gorilla trekking is only available from age 15. For couples, the suites add a more romantic note with king-size four-poster beds. Altogether, Sabyinyo provides a charming, comfortable stay surrounded by Rwanda’s mountain air.
