MalaMala Rattray’s Camp is hidden in a grove of trees on the banks of the Sand River, within one of South Africa’s most legendary private game reserves. The river draws wildlife year-round and it’s not uncommon to spot elephants crossing from the comfort of your deck. The camp’s interiors evoke the elegance of a bygone era, with Persian carpets, leather furnishings and a curated library of rare African literature setting the scene for a richly layered stay in the bush.
Game drives are deliberately unhurried and highly personalised, with no more than six guests per vehicle. MalaMala Game Reserve is known for its consistent Big 5 sightings as well as African wild dogs. Your guide will adapt each excursion to your interests – whether that’s birdwatching or photographing elephants at sunrise. Back at camp, you can lounge beside the infinity pool with a view of the river, enjoy a massage or share stories around the fire in the traditional boma.
Each suite opens onto a private river-facing verandah and a plunge pool built for long, quiet afternoons. You’ll find indoor and outdoor dining spaces, vintage clawfoot tubs and walk-in double showers, alongside thoughtful details like air conditioning and a well-stocked minibar. MalaMala Rattray’s Camp welcomes children aged 16 and up, making it ideal for couples or friends travelling together, and transfers to and from the MalaMala Airfield are included.
