The Place of Great Noise

120km west of Upington, the Orange River winds its way through the 55,383ha of the Augrabies Falls National Park, dividing into numerous channels before surging down the 56m-high Augrabies Falls and continuing its path through the 18 kilometre Orange River Gorge. Visitors to the park will never forget the sight and sounds of this barrage of water, named after the Khoi people’s word for ‘Place of Great Noise’.

The grounds of the park on both sides of the Orange River are punctuated with craggy outcrops forming prominent landmarks in the scrub-speckled terrain, where springbok, giraffes, caracals, and leopards roam freely. Moon Rock forms a massive dome from which a bird’s-eye view of the park can be enjoyed. Peer over the deep gorge from the Oranjekom and Ararat’s viewpoints, while Verreaux’s eagles watch warily from their nests. A search for the hardy flora and fauna that populate the area can be conducted on foot or by 4x4.

Humble family cottages and bungalows at the Augrabies Rest Camp provide a base from which to explore the park. Roads in the park are gravelled and are ideal for self-drive game drives. The park is also close to other natural attractions such as the Spitskop Nature Reserve.
