Kenton-on-Sea

The place where the sun spends the winter

The attractive town of Kenton-on-Sea is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Bushman’s and Kariega Rivers and the warm Indian Ocean. Birds gather along the aloe-lined banks of both rivers, while the sand dune-flanked and rock pool dotted beaches house beachgoers all year-round, fitting of a town known as ‘the place where the sun spends the winter’.

Nature lovers and sunbathers alike will find plenty of reasons to visit this town. Both rivers are easily navigable affording visitors a chance to sample the rich birdlife that populates their banks or pluck fish from their waters. Golden sand beaches stretch for as far as the eye can see and intricate rock pools offer up their treasures to curious visitors. The waters of the ocean are populated by southern right and humpback whales during their annual migration, and the massive sea mammals can be seen breaching in the distance.

A trip up the Kariega River from Kenton-on-Sea will take visitors to malaria-free game reserves, some of which feature Big 5 experiences. Kenton-on-Sea is easily reachable, located halfway between East London and Port Elizabeth, and features a good range of accommodation options.
