Howick

The mystical falls of Howick

From its source in the grand Drakensberg range, the mighty Umgeni River powers toward the edge of the Midlands Plateau from which it thunders down in a magnificent cascade into a pool so turbulent that it is believed to have mystical powers. Surrounding these mythical falls is the charming town of Howick, whose beautiful old churches and shady trees are fitting counterparts to the majesty of the tumbling waters.

The thundering falls form the centrepiece of the town and visitors can capture its gushing waters in beautiful photographs from different viewpoints. For a chance to get up close and personal with the falls, visitors can abseil down the sheer rock wall before jumping into an inflatable boat that takes them to the start of an indigenous forest walk which leads to the Howick Falls Conservancy—home to the magnificent fish eagle.

Howick is located only 29km from Pietermaritzburg and is often seen as the hub of the Midlands area. The bustling taverns, cafes, and restaurants of Howick ensure that a visit is never dull. A vast array of arts and crafts for sale at the old Agricultural Hall introduces visitors to the fascinating culture of the Zulus.
