Midlands

Meander through KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands

Wandering inland from Durban, travellers will come upon the striking Kwazulu Natal Midlands: a and packed with rich farmland and beautiful stretches of hills and forests. Beginning at the charming town of Pietermaritzburg, visitors will find themselves travelling through a fertile paradise in which rivers run peacefully, forming lakes and waterfalls on their way down from the Drakensberg mountain range whose foothills mark the end of the area.

The Midlands are synonymous with the Midlands Meander, an arranged route that takes in the magnificent scenery while stopping at the over 150 coffee shops, restaurants, guesthouses, and arts and crafts places that have set up shop along the route. Those looking for adventure can hike through the mist-belt forests in the hills of Karkloof, soar through the treetops on a canopy tour, or participate in many other activities, including horse riding, swimming, biking, and fishing.

Located at the beginning of the Midlands and the biggest city in the area, Pietermaritzburg is the ideal place from which to start a Midlands Meander, while the city itself charms with its Victorian architecture. Although only an hour from Durban, the climate is moderate compared to the coastal region.
