The Kalahari’s desert flower

In search of the ultimate remote African retreat? Look no further than the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the continent’s most pristine and untouched wildernesses. Covering an area of 52,000km², the CKGR is the second largest wildlife reserve on the globe. The reserve served as a sanctuary for the area’s indigenous inhabitants - the San bushmen - and was untouched by outside influences until the 1980s when visitors began to cross through the boundaries and explore the reserve.

After the short summer rains, succulently sweet grassland spring from the earth and attract thousands of springbok and gemsbok - with ever-hungry predators such as black-maned lions, cheetah, leopard, and brown hyena following not too far behind. No need to be deterred when wildlife becomes scant later in the year as visitors will be treated to vast open spaces giving the impression of complete and utter solitude.

Visitors can stay at the small number of camps and lodges in the reserve or try their hand at the Kalahari wilderness by self-driving across the landscape. The remnants of an ancient lake tributary have left fossilised salt pans in their wake. The most famous of these is Deception Valley, renowned for giving the illusion of being filled with water at certain times of the day. The reserve can be easily reached by the Deception Valley airstrip or the town of Ghanzi, some 150km away.
