Safari lodges in Kafue National Park, Zambia

Spanning 22,400km² (more or less the size of Wales), Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and Africa’s fifth-largest national park. Thanks to its vastness, the range of experiences this park has to offer is as varied as its ecosystem. Although Kafue is only a four-hour drive from Livingstone, it remains under most safari-goers’ radars – which means this park still has plenty of virgin bush for intrepid travellers to explore.

The northern Busanga Plains are undoubtedly the best for game-viewing. These floodplains are fed by the Lufupa River and, in the drier months, wildlife flock to its abundant waterways to quench their thirst. The game-viewing experience is further enhanced by open plains which are dotted with tufts of wild-date palms, sausage trees, and fig trees. The southern area of the park, populated with thick Mopane woodlands and rocky outcrops, are less ideal for game-viewing.

Kafue is renowned for its especially diverse antelope population, but these are hardly the only animals you’ll see here: lion, leopard, buffalo, zebra, cheetah, and wild dog are among the other mammals roaming the plains. Plus: Kafue is also a mecca for bird-watching (with over 400 species recorded) and game-fishing.
