Zambia's first Relais & Châteaux property, Royal Chundu Luxury Zambezi Lodges are a favourite of ours. They were voted Zambia's Leading Safari Lodge at the World Travel Awards 2013 and truly offer the best of all worlds with their unbeatable location on the famed Zambezi River.
The Zambezi is a river of mystique that has lured the hardiest of explorers over the years and continues to to this day. From David Livingstone in 1855, the first European to see the Victoria Falls, a little distance from Royal Chundu, to the many travellers from all over the world that we send to this wondorous region in the present day, the Zambezi is an African landmark worth visiting at least once.
Royal Chundu is equidistant from both Chobe and the Victoria Falls so while being based here you can easily go on day trips to both of these great destinations. Stay at River Lodge, with its large double showers, infinity pool and 15 kilometres of private waterway all to yourself; or Island Lodge, for something more exclusive, with four remote private villas set between the baobabs, each with an open-air bath, infinity pool and private dining deck.
Teak walkways meander their way to the main lodge, where traditional and international cuisine can be savoured. Expect dishes that echo the rich heritage of the region and the hospitality of the Zambian people. The lodge has fully serviced bar facilities. Dine indoors or out in the boma, treated to an authentic African barbeque, song and dance. Go on a lunch or dinner boat cruise or picnic on the island.
There are many activities on offer that you needn't amble too far from the lodge to enjoy - always a comfort after a long trip. Go on a sunset and sunrise boat cruise along the Zambezi River or try your hand at fishing or canoeing, go bird watching, on a village tour and an island walk. And of course you're going to want to visit the Victoria Falls. There are more activities that the lodge managers can help you organise. There's also a spa at the lodge, where you can enjoy some R&R.
Chundu Children’s Club
At the child-friendly Royal Chundu there are several activities offered by trained staff to entertain your little ones, subject to length of stay and guide availability. These include a treasure hunt, frogging safari, butterfly and insect capture and release, fishing tag and release, cosmic safari, birding, and cooking lessons with the Chundu Chefs. Children under 2 will be cared for by child minders at the lodge, while parents get back to the holiday at hand.
What our guests thought
“I was mentally prepared for luxury the likes of which I had never experienced. Royal Chundu – the name means “meeting place of the chief” – did not disappoint. From the time we arrived, we were in a state of increasing awe. I am still processing it all.” - Anne & Mark Thomas
"Royal Chundu is beautiful and the Island Lodge was spectacular. The showers and outdoor bathtub were the highlights of the accommodation and the sundowner cruise on the river was gorgeous. I would also highly recommend the lunch on Livingstone Island and the swim in Devil’s Pool." - Brad & Debbie Baumgarten
