The Manor at Ngorongoro

Coffee plantation-living just south of the Ngorongoro Crater

Once home to a giant volcano rumoured to have been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater now acts as a protective basin for flourishing fauna and flora. Considered the only intact caldera in the world, measuring 2,000ft deep and covering just under 26,000ha, it is unsurprising that Ngorongoro is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park. The Manor at Ngorongoro, located on Shangri-La Coffee plantation, brings its own unstinting brand of luxury to this bountiful part of Tanzania.

Views from the rim of the Ngorongoro are resplendently dramatic whilst the floor of the crater is heavily populated with game. The Lerai Forest in the southwest part of the park is rumoured to have the best leopard sightings on the continent and visitors will be treated to sights of Maasai herdsmen watching over their cattle, while natural predators roam the area in search of their next meal. A population of some of the last free-ranging black rhinos graze in some parts, while African elephants wander their trails of old.

Visitors to the park can rest assured that they will feel at home in the lavish cottages at The Manor, a perfect location to take in the unique surroundings of the coffee plantation and Ngorongoro crater. All ten cottages include en-suite bathrooms, private decks and indoor as well as outdoor fireplaces. The manor houses an extensive library, snooker table and steam and sauna room – perfect places to relax and socialise after an exciting day exploring the park. Excursions to a Maasai-market, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge and bicycle trails along the crater can easily be organised.
