Cape Country at the Beach

Noordhoek is perched on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, between Chapman’s Peak and the Cape Peninsula. This country suburb hugs the green southern slopes of the mountain and spills onto Long Beach’s white sands. Noordhoek is renowned for its country-style charm, laid-back atmosphere and wide, sandy beach that stretches for 8km before merging with the neighbouring village of Kommetjie.

Grazing horses and cows, darting rabbits, and waddling ducks are common sights among the gardens and tree-lined lanes of the village. Noordhoek’s drawing card is undoubtedly the horseback rides along kilometres of pristine coastline that are available. Visitors can enjoy an idle walk or exhilarating canter along the beach’s wet sand and shallow waters. The desolate appeal of Long Beach is heightened by the rusted, forgotten frame of the Kakapo ship which ran aground over a hundred years ago.

The beach is popular among dog walkers and birdwatchers although the waves are often dotted with surfers, body boarders, and kite surfers. Nature trails lead through the surrounding dunes, fynbos, and vineyards. The Atlantic Ocean’s breeze nurtures a terroir that is ideal for cultivating Sauvignon Blanc wines and visitors are encouraged to taste the tingling fruity flavours and pair it with locally-made cheese that brings out the best of both.
