Makakatana Bay Lodge

The teeming banks of the St Lucia Estuary are home to a plethora of flourishing wildlife. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines densely populated land and marine environments to create a truly unique safari experience. Makakatana Bay Lodge is the only privately owned lodge within the park and is hidden amid riverine forest mere metres from the water’s edge.

Lake St Lucia boasts a jaw-dropping five ecosystems. With the title of largest marine lake on the continent, the park is home to an impressive 367 bird species – a twitcher's paradise – along with four of the Big 5, hippo and crocodile among others.

Personal and private service is a given at Makakatana with only five Suites and one Honeymoon Suite. All have air conditioning, minibar, phones, outdoor showers, tea/coffee-making facilities and a private game-viewing deck. Wade about in the bush pool on the lake’s edge, have a drink in the bar, and enjoy an al fresco boma dinner. Guests can enjoy morning, afternoon and night game drives around the park, along with bird, boating and beach safaris.
