An Okavango Delta island escape

The intimate Jacana Camp is perched on an island dotted with palms within the Jao Flats, among the Okavango Delta’s largest areas of floodplains, and is seldom not surrounded by water. Like its long-toed avian namesake which makes its delicate way across trails of lily pads, the camp occupies a disc of green in a watery wonderland of channels and papyrus swamps from which you can set forth and explore.

The 60,000ha Jao Concession, bordered by Moremi Game Reserve, constitutes a generous serving of the Delta’s wetland ecosystem. Depending on water levels, visitors can embark on mokoro excursions and boating outings – giving particular insight into wetland species such as the shy sitatunga, red lechwe, hippos and water birds – or head out on a game drive where plains game and accompanying predators may feature more.

Jacana’s five en-suite Meru-style Tents – including one Family Tent – and main area are all built on raised wooden decks proffering views of the beautiful surrounds. The east-facing double-storey main building includes an open-sided dining area, cosy lounge, bar, tea/coffee station and an open-air fireplace. A plunge pool is also available.
