One of Botswana’s few Relais & Châteaux safari camps, Zarafa Camp overlooks a broad sweep of the Zibadianja Lagoon. From first light, the water becomes a stage: hippos surface in the shallows, African skimmers call from above and elephants wade chest-deep to feed on papyrus. Set beneath towering ebony trees, the camp holds an exceptional vantage point over a permanent water system that anchors wildlife year-round.
Embark on game drives that traverse floodplains and woodlands linking the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti River. This is serious predator country: Leopards are frequently seen draped over branches or slipping along the lagoon’s edge, while African wild dogs and lions patrol overlapping territories. Buffalo gather in force and the sight of rare antelope such as roan and sable adds to the surreal experience. You don’t always need to leave camp to see wildlife – herds regularly cross the open ground in front of the suites. When conditions allow, pontoon boating on the lagoon offers a water-level perspective of elephants feeding, crocodiles sliding from the banks and the sky turning copper at dusk.
Zarafa Camp holds a small handful of expansive tented suites, each raised on reclaimed railway-sleeper decking and measuring over 100 square metres under flowing canvas. Interiors feature handcrafted details, claw-foot copper baths, a gas fireplace and an open-plan bathroom. Wide private decks wrap around each suite, complete with a plunge pool and outdoor shower. The main area includes indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a private wine cellar, spa and open-air gym. Constructed from recycled hardwoods and powered by its own solar farm, Zarafa Camp pairs design with a strong conservation ethos. The camp also warmly welcomes families with children six years and older.
