In Zimbabwe’s private Sapi Reserve, Tembo Plains Camp sits close to the Zambezi River, where thick forest gives way to open floodplains and wide, sandy channels. This is a region shaped as much by elephants as by water, their paths etched into the earth, their presence constant. Here, you have access to explore both the private Sapi Reserve and neighbouring Mana Pools National Park, covering more than 330,000 hectares of protected terrain.
African wild dogs move with purpose across the plains, lions patrol the river margins and buffalo herds gather in serious numbers, sometimes wading into the shallows to cool off. The river itself is part of the experience. Drift quietly past pods of hippo in your canoe, explore wider channels by boat or pause on a sandbank as the light begins to soften while watching animals cross. Day and night game drives offer different perspectives on the reserve, while guided walks slow the pace, drawing your attention to the layered ecology that sustains this stretch of wilderness.
The camp’s design combines canvas and stone, drawing subtle inspiration from the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Each suite has a full en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and indoor and outdoor showers. Enjoy a generous private indoor lounge with river views, a pool, outdoor dining area and veranda designed for lingering. Families with children aged six and older are most welcome. There are also complimentary professional cameras and lenses available for use, with images downloaded upon departure.
