&Beyond Phinda Forest Lodge is tucked deep within Africa’s last remaining dry sand forest, in Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. One of the world’s first eco-designed luxury safari lodges, it was built without removing a single tree, allowing the forest to remain the focus of the stay. Glass walls, filtered light and towering canopies give the lodge a serene, almost secretive presence, while the surrounding reserve opens into nearly 30,000 hectares of private traversing across seven distinct habitats.
Phinda’s landscape gives a variable quality to every safari, from cool sand forest to open Big 5 wilderness. Morning and afternoon game drives set out in open vehicles, with limited vehicles at sightings and off-roading for close wildlife encounters when conditions allow. Phinda is especially known for cheetah and black rhino, while the sand forest shelters shy suni and rare red duiker. Nature walks bring you even closer to the land, while night drives, family safaris, birding, photographic safaris and private game drives can be arranged to extend your experience further. Sleepouts, Zulu village visits, conservation experiences and nearby ocean adventures are also available to book. Back at the lodge, the rim-flow pool overlooks an open vlei where animals often graze, while the firepit, bar, boma, interactive kitchen, wellness spa, gym, safari shop, gallery and wine cellar create generous spaces between safaris.
The suites and two-bedroom family suite draw the forest in through floor-to-ceiling glass walls, filtered light and leafy views. Natural textures, soft neutral tones and handcrafted Zulu-inspired details create a calm, contemporary space, while private verandas with daybeds and spacious bathrooms with soaking tubs, showers and double vanities make returning from safari feel deeply restorative.
