Magashi Camp opens up a different side of Rwanda in Akagera National Park, where savannah, woodland, wetland and lakes replace the mist of the gorilla forest. Set beside Lake Rwanyakazinga in a private wilderness area, the camp gives you access to Rwanda’s last remaining refuge for savannah species. Lion, black and white rhino, elephant, buffalo and antelope all move through this recovering landscape, making Magashi a natural companion to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Akagera rewards curiosity at every turn. Set out on game drives across open plains, tracking predators and rhino with your guide or take to the water on boat safaris past hippos, crocodiles and prolific birdlife. The experience also invites participation, with opportunities to support conservation monitoring through identikits used for leopard, lion and rhino. After an active day, ease back into camp life with a massage, lakeside downtime or poolside sundowners. As evening settles, traditional cuisine, storytelling, song and dance bring a warm Rwandan close to the day.
Spacious tented suites face Lake Rwanyakazinga, keeping the water and surrounding wilderness close. Each suite offers a comfortable base between safari activities, with an open, elevated feel and views across one of Akagera’s most peaceful landscapes. Welcoming couples, friends and families with children from the age of 6, the camp has a warm, sociable atmosphere, with shared spaces for dining, unwinding by the pool or exchanging safari stories with fellow travellers after a day in the wild.
