Resting along the dry Mwagusi River in Ruaha National Park, the boutique Kokoko Camp is surrounded by baobabs, fig and jackalberry trees, with rocky outcrops where leopards are often seen. Life at this intimate, exclusive-use camp slows to the pace of the bush – from the stillness of dawn broken by bird calls to the flicker of lanterns lighting a riverbed dinner under the stars.
Head out at first light, when wildlife is most active, to walk the sandy channels of the Mwagusi River. Game drives reveal Ruaha’s legendary wildlife, including prides of lions, leopards, cheetahs, large elephant herds and rare wild dogs as well as an extraordinary diversity of bird species. As night falls, the atmosphere changes – civets, genets and owls appear as night drives reveal an entirely different side to the bush. Afterwards, return to camp for meals cooked on the open fire and stargazing deep into the night.
Kokoko Camp keeps things intentionally uncomplicated. Tents are light and open, with mesh walls and bucket showers, yet still comfortable with sunrise-facing beds, a private deck and retractable roofs for sleeping under the stars. Children 12 years of age and older are welcome at camp, and the shared spaces are easy-going and welcoming, whether you’re swapping stories or enjoying a quiet drink. The genuine Tanzanian hospitality makes the experience here both grounding and memorable.
