The Maldives is technically part of Asia, located some 671km south-west of Sri Lanka, on the equator. It is the smallest Asian country geographically and also boasts the smallest population of 350,000 people. It is mainly Muslim, and strict laws prohibiting things such as alcohol and pork are enforced on the inhabited islands. But the resorts are a law unto their own and visitors have nothing to worry about with none of the laws applying to the tourist regions. 202 of the islands are populated and 87 of them are exclusive resorts, meaning visitors are quite literally spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding on their dream destination.
The Maldives is famous for being the lowest country in the world and is under threat from rising sea levels due to global warming. Most of the country is just 1.5m above sea level with a highest point of 2.3m! As a result the government has begun to purchase land from Sri Lanka, India and neighbouring countries in case the islands do go under water. So we recommend that you visit this kaleidoscope of islands and experience its magic before it's too late!
