North Coast

Peaceful solitude and a buzzing North-Coast nightlife

Visitors to Zanzibar who are looking for respite from the rat race will no doubt be drawn to the white-sand beaches, palm-frond-dotted horizon, and inviting Indian Ocean waters that are scattered across Unguja’s north coast. This part of the island is renowned for its superb beachfront, its array of resorts and luxury accommodation, and is less affected by tide than other parts of the island.

Although this part of the island is far less crowded than Stone Town, visitors can choose between a quiet stay in Kendwa or the vibrant buzzing town of Nungwi—two spots located a three-kilometre stretch down the beach from one another. Nungwi was once a small dhow-building centre until tourists discovered its treasures and have since been arriving in small droves, injecting life into this sea-side scene. Kendwa is an ideal place for those wanting to experience a quieter getaway with sparsely populated beaches.

The North Coast is an unparalleled snorkelling and diving mecca offering magical underwater retreats, particularly on Mnemba Island. Parasailing has also become increasingly popular and offers resplendent views of the surrounding islands and turquoise waters. The north coast is easily reached by daladala, minibus, or taxi.
