Saadani National Park

Safari by the sea at Saadani

Tanzania’s enviable coastline and game-filled savannahs merge into one in the Saadani National Park – the only park in the country to border the sea. The village, which was once a thriving harbour town and trading centre, is now a sleepy fishing settlement that shares the park with shy leopard, beach-roaming lions, green turtles, and colobus monkeys. Saadani undoubtedly offers one of the most unique wildlife-viewing spectacles on the continent and is a mere 40km (that’s a 14 minute-long flight) away from the island of Zanzibar.

Buffalo and hartebeest are often seen grazing in the tall grass while Tanzania’s national animal, the giraffe, nibbles on the leaves of acacia trees. Warthogs sometimes wander the streets of Saadani village, while Nile crocodiles and hippopotami wallow in the murky depths of the Wami river. Green turtles lay their eggs in the soft sand along the coastline while the mangrove forests protect a flourishing marine ecosystem.

Visitors can enjoy walking safaris, day and night game-drives, boat cruises, and snorkelling in the waters around Mafui sand bank. The 110,000ha park is only 44km from the town of Bagamoyo and can be reached by its river, by road, and by light aircraft. A daily bus also commutes between Saadani and Dar-es-Salaam some 300km away.
