Nieuwoudtville

The Bulb Capital of the World

Driving up the winding Vanrhyns Pass, travellers will cross the border from the Western Cape into The Northern Cape. Atop this pass is the striking Bokkeveld plateau: a magnificent area dense with spring-blossoming bulbs, so dense in fact that it has the highest speciation of indigenous bulbs in the world. Standing proudly on the plateau are the striking sandstone buildings of Nieuwoudtville - a pretty town proudly known to the locals as ‘the Bulb Capital of the World’.

Before setting out into the bounteous surroundings, visitors can take in the beauty of the fascinating sandstone buildings of which the majestic Neo-Gothic sandstone church is the undeniable centrepiece. To get an idea of just how extensive the bulb speciation is here, visitors can visit the Nieuwoudtville Bulb Nursery. Best of all, visitors can explore the surrounding areas on their own on hiking trails or gaze at the stars in the clear night sky.

Just outside town, the beautiful Nieuwoudtville waterfall, one of the most underrated waterfalls in South Africa, spurts out from a rocky ravine to crash on the rocks 100m below. The small size of Nieuwoudtville offers visitors the opportunity to relish silence among pristine nature, rare for a town speckled with such a strong choice of guesthouses.
