Garies

Garies: Almost in the middle of nowhere

Standing seemingly in the middle of nowhere, the tiny town of Garies is located in the heart of the Namaqualand and consists of just one long street peppered with houses and shops. The daily hustle and bustle of the townsfolk drown out the trickle of the Garies stream flowing quietly alongside the town. This quaint setting does not prepare one for the spectacle that spring brings when lavish blossoms carpet the arid landscape surrounding the town.

The spectacle of Namaqualand’s spring flowers is best experienced on the Namaqualand Flower Trail Run, a 20km loop on the Roodebergskloof Trail, which starts just north of Garies. After visitors are done exploring the beautiful flower display, they can get a taste of the town’s history at the Letterklip – a unique rock formation that was fortified and occupied by British forces during the Anglo-Boer War.

The main draw of the town is its position in the heart of the Namaqualand. The closest place of note to Garies is the town of Kamieskroon, which features wonderful mountain biking trails. To reach a town that is considered ‘big’, visitors would have to travel some 120km to Springbok. Here they will find a range of accommodation options and supplies.
