Clanwilliam

The rooibos town

The heart of the rooibos tea industry is located in the humble town of Clanwilliam, regarded as the only town in the world where this caffeine-less and healthy tea is cultivated. As one of the ten oldest towns in South Africa, Clanwilliam proudly displays its heritage through its many historically fascinating buildings, which stand under the peaceful bastion of the Cederberg Mountain range.

Of these beautiful old buildings, seven are national monuments and can be admired on historical walks through the town centre. The town’s main industry, the cultivation of rooibos tea, can be observed at the Elandsberg Rooibos Estate. Daily tours allow visitors a glimpse at the process from planting to packaging. The nearby Clanwilliam and Bulshoek Dams are popular among water sports enthusiasts and families who picnic on their shores.

Another important part of the town’s history is the endangered Clanwilliam cedar of which a smattering can be found conserved in the mountainous terrain of the Cederberg Wilderness Area. The most westerly wines in the country are cultivated in the surrounding areas. Its good range of accommodation options and proximity to Cape Town make Clanwilliam an ideal portal to the West Coast region.
