Wild Coast Destinations

The rough-and-ready Wild Coast

The Wild Coast is a stretch of some of South Africa's most remote and unspoilt coastline. The swathe of land stretches from East London to Port Edward and includes the former Transkei homeland. Rolling green hills dotted with traditional thatched rondavels line the N2 highway; from which gravel roads lead to tiny towns surrounded by vast beaches peppered with Nguni cows and flanked by precipitous cliffs.

The charm of this stretch of coastline lies in venturing off the beaten track. There’s no coastal road, meaning visitors will have to take detours down dusty paths in search of beach towns. This is a nature lover’s paradise packed with remote hikes through untouched forests and along dramatic cliff edges. The Hole in the Wall - a massive hole in a giant offshore stack of rock – near Coffee Bay will inspire visitors’ awe.

The two most popular towns, Coffee Bay and Port St Johns, are a backpacker’s paradise and a great place to seek refuge from the wildness of the area. The coastline is rich in Xhosa heritage and is the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. The East London region of the Wild Coast is the easiest to navigate and home to a variety of beautiful seaside towns.
