St Francis Bay

South Africa’s Little Venice

A series of man-made canals and waterways dotted with a collection of white-walled and thatched houses, weave together to form St Francis Bay. Peddled as the country’s ‘little Venice’, St Francis Bay lies west of Port Elizabeth and is the eastern gateway to the lush Garden Route

St Francis Bay is home to eggshell-coloured beaches, warm waters and waves that would tempt any surfer. The waters and canals invite swimmers, boaters, kite boarders and windsurfers while its small harbour offers shelter for fishing vessels. Watch local boat crews set to work, repairing their nets and launching their boats before returning hours later to offload their catch of the day. The Kromme River estuary is connected to an extensive canal system that has left visitors with private beaches to sunbathe on and cast a line from.

For those who prefer dry land, the acres of fynbos, wild flowers and coastal vegetation are excellent places to begin your exploration. Enjoy a leisurely horseback ride along Oyster Bay’s beaches or meander between the coastline’s ever-changing sand dunes. St Francis Bay is easily reached by Port Elizabeth airport and is an ideal place to begin your exploration of the Garden Route.
