Port Alfred

The heart of the Sunshine Coast

Sprawled along the banks of the Kowie River between Port Elizabeth and East London, Port Alfred has long been touted as the heart of the Sunshine Coast. With a river meandering through town, long swathes of beach dotted with mansions and a postcard-perfect marina, it will come as no surprise that this is a popular seaside destination for local and international visitors alike.

With its warm waters and stunning reefs, Port Alfred will have water fanatics spending their days fishing, canoeing and water-skiing up the Kowie, kite-surfing on the beach, signing up for local diving courses or trying their hand at surfing. Don’t expect to be the only one enjoying the swell, though! Dolphin and whale sightings are common in the area while the beaches are scattered with over 18,000 types of shells waiting to be collected.

If water sports aren’t your thing, the Gary Player golf course is around the corner boasting innovatively placed bunkers and multiple tees that will excite even the most seasoned golfer. For avid birders, the Kowie river’s lush, indigenous vegetation attracts an array of birdlife that can be viewed from the nature trails along its banks. Port Alfred is neighboured by several game reserves, including iconic Shamwari – home to the Big 5.
