Jeffrey’s Bay

Sunshine, surf and shell-covered sands in J-Bay

A little way past the Garden Route and on South Africa’s Sunshine Coast, Jeffrey’s Bay is renowned for its sunshine, surfing and picturesque beaches. Dolphins ride the supertubes alongside surfers while beach bums bask in the sun, disturbed only by passing horses and their riders ambling along the coastline.

Safe in the knowledge that there is always a lifeguard on duty lay down a towel, dive into the waves and soak up the sun while absorbing the town’s laid back attitude. If you’re itching for an adrenaline rush, grab a board and join the ranks of fellow grommets (novice surfers) or opt for dune boarding, kite and windsurfing, snorkelling, canoeing or quad biking. If the weather takes a turn, visit the Shell Museum, housing the largest collection of seashells in South Africa, and the Surf Museum.

For birders that are always on the lookout, the 66 hectare Seekoei Nature Reserve is home to over 120 different bird species. Some of the reserve’s other inhabitants include caracal, grysbok, blue duiker, porcupine and the Cape genet. Kabeljous Nature Reserve offers self-guided nature walks amid coastal dunes, sprawling wetlands and forest.
