East London

The gateway to sunshine and wilderness

East London is South Africa’s only river port city and despite its city status still retains a small-town feel. It’s surrounded on all sides by natural wonders, including its pristine beaches stretching along the shoreline to form the Sunshine Coast to the west and the Wild Coast to the east. Travellers will find East London to be an ideal base for their adventures, whether they’re venturing to the ocean or inland towards the verdant Amathole Mountains.

East London revolves around its beaches, particularly Nahoon Beach (a surfer’s paradise with kilometres of pristine sand) and the Blue Flag status Gonubie Beach located just 25km north of the city. Enjoy one of the best milkshakes in the country at Friesland Milk Bar - a renowned local institution. The East London Museum showcases a stuffed coelacanth and fossil footprints estimated to be 124,000 years old.

The two coasts extending from East London both live up to their name: the Sunshine Coast features sun-drenched swimming and surfing beaches, while the Wild Coast is rugged and houses beautiful forest-covered bays. The Amathole mountains house quaint towns such as Hogsback—alleged to have inspired the setting of Lord of the Rings.
