Pumba Game Reserve

Where the White Lion wanders

Lying in a particularly extraordinary setting comprised of sweeping grasslands and knots of forest, the Pumba Game Reserve is ironically not known for its warthogs (as Lion King fans will be sad to found out) although they can often be seen with their snout to the ground eagerly searching for roots or trotting perkily amid the grassland with their tails standing to attention. Instead, many visitors flock to Pumba to see the rare white lion.

The reserve’s white lions can be found in only one part of the five biomes in the reserve - a necessary precaution to ensure their gene pool is kept pure. They are more easily spotted than their tawny cousins as their white pelt stands vividly against the green landscape. Game drives and guided bush walks reveal more of the reserve’s wildlife including the Big 5, hippo, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, aardwolf and an array of antelope species.

With over 300 species of birds gracing this part of The Eastern Cape, Pumba is the ideal place for birdwatchers to visit. From trekking through the Afromontane Forest to navigating along the river banks and valleys of Brookhuizenspoort, bend an ear to your game guide as he relays stories about the stars and the bush. Try your luck at bass fishing and archery, or retire to the spa where the reserve’s natural ambience is incorporated to rejuvenate the soul.
