Amakhala Game Reserve

Romance and intrigue at Amakhala

Just north of Port Elizabeth and on the doorstep of the Addo Elephant Park, visitors will find Amakhala Game Reserve. Patches of forest, robust Nama Karoo, dense thickets of valley, thorn-tree terrain and sweeping grasslands cover the area. Here you will find that the vegetation is almost as compelling as the reserve’s wildlife inhabitants.

Game drives are about more than just the popular Big 5 and other beguiling beasts such as cheetah and giraffe. The safari guides will divert your attention to humbler, smaller creatures like the shy bat-eared fox, furtive monkeys, tortoises and unusual insects. Guided walks will give guests a closer look at the landscape and its oft-overlooked treasures. The Bushman’s River, curving through the landscape, sustains a variety of riverine birdlife and its banks can be explored by boat cruise or canoe. The rare Cape clawless otter may surface for a moment before vanishing again in a splash of water while the fish eagle soars above, unleashing its distinctive cry on the surrounding landscape.

The reserve’s lodges are nothing short of luxurious complete with private plunge pools, fireplaces, romantic indoor and outdoor showers and game-viewing decks. Relaxation abounds in the soothing Whisper Room, home to massages and body treatments. Amakhala aims not only to look after their guests but the reserve’s inhabitants as well. The reserve is home to a conservation initiative that reintroduces animals to the area, making a contribution to the conservation of South Africa’s natural heritage.
