Alicedale

The rebirth of a once-thriving town

Once a thriving central junction for rail transport in South Africa, Alicedale is now a tiny and humble town due to the transfer of railway functions to Port Elizabeth. However, thanks to the development of the nearby Bushman Sands Game Reserve and Hotel, Alicedale is seeing a rebirth, giving the town a chance to display its rich multicultural heritage to visitors.

This heritage can be experienced by simply walking down the town’s streets, lined with Victorian architecture, or by studying some of the many ancient Khoisan rock paintings that dot the wilderness surrounds. Located practically inside the town, the Bushman Sands Game Reserve offers a malaria-free Big 5 wildlife experience, as well as sunset cruises on its large dam. Visitors can also enjoy a round of golf at the Gary Player-designed Bushman Sands Golf Course.

Set in a horseshoe of the Bushman’s River, Alicedale is in proximity to the award-winning Shamwari Game Reserve as well as Grahamstown. A train ride from Grahamstown to Alicedale is a great way to reach the town and takes visitors through some of the magnificent landscapes and a historical tunnel. Besides the Bushman Sands Hotel, there are a number of B&B’s in town.
