Polokwane Game Reserve

Polokwane Game Reserve: a birdwatcher’s paradise

A birdwatcher’s paradise awaits at the Polokwane Game Reserve, just 11km outside of Polokwane and a leisurely 3 hour’s drive from Johannesburg. Important indigenous birds like the short-clawed lark, ashy tit, and the Kalahari scrub-robin flutter through the last remaining patches of the Pietersburg Plateau false grassland, an extremely localised vegetation type which the reserve conserves.

The 3,200ha of open savannahs are home to the rare white rhino, which roams the reserve alongside tsessebe and sable antelope. The reserve is cobwebbed with a healthy network of roads making it easy to explore on self-drive game drives. Those who want to take in the sights and sounds at their own pace can amble along the 21km-long hiking route. However, the most stunning way to explore the area is on horseback, which can be done by day or by the light of the moon.

The 20 species of game and over 300 species of bird that populate the reserve can be observed throughout the year due to the moderate temperatures of the region. The proximity of Polokwane allows travellers to visit on day trips, though self-catering accommodation in the reserve can be used as a relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
