Richmond

A little slice of history among beautiful surroundings

The small agricultural town of Richmond is situated among the rolling hills of the Kwazulu Natal Midlands; flanked by privately-owned game and nature reserves in the nearby Hela-Hela Valley, and laced with water features such as the fish-filled Beaulieu Dam and Illovo River. Not to be outdone by its generous surroundings, Richmond boasts a host of noteworthy historical buildings of great interest.

The diverse history of the settlers, local Bhaca people, and Indian community that have inhabited the town at various points in time, can be explored at the Richmond, Byrne and District Museum. The museum houses many interesting artefacts in its ancient Presbyterian manse. To get a taste of nature in the area - try your hand at reeling in monster-sized carp from the nearby Beaulieu Dam. The dam hosts angling competitions from time to time, as well as other water-based activities.

Richmond is in proximity to the sandstone cliffs and Umkomaas River of the Hela-Hela Valley, which houses the Highover Nature Reserve, Game Valley Estates, and the Qunu Forest Reserve, making it the ideal place from which to explore this activity-filled area. The tiny village of Byrne, reminiscent of rural England, lies curled up in a valley some 12km outside of Richmond.
