Umhlanga

Where golden beaches fade into rolling valleys

Umhlanga’s golden beaches are lapped by Indian Ocean waters and its coastline stretches northwards for over 200km to iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Inland, Umhlanga extends over seemingly endless sugarcane fields that fade into the undulant landscape of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, the impressive Inanda Dam, and Zululand.

Ocean enthusiasts will be in their element. Dive into the waters to explore wrecks teeming with fish, reef formations that lead to canyons or those surrounded by sand. Reel in the biggest catch or ride the biggest wave. Watch humpback whales make their annual migration to Mozambique or dolphins playing in the swell. Umhlanga Rocks’ beach is lined with luxury hotels, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, pubs and clubs as well as Gateway Theatre of Shopping. If you’re after a quiet patch of sand, Bronze Beach offers seclusion whereas Umdloti, Zinkwazi and Salt Rock are ideal for accommodating families.

Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve is a slice of wilderness with wetland, coastline and dune forest. Follow the nature trails and keep an eye out for the shy duiker hiding among the trees. Inland, hills, cliffs and valleys rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River to form the Valley of a Thousand Hills. It is here that traditional Zulu culture can still be observed.
