Ballito

The pearl of the Dolphin Coast

Ballito is the pearl of the subtropical Dolphin Coast, just 40km north of the vibrant city of Durban. The coastal town is comfortably flanked by the rolling green hills of Kwazulu Natal and the sun-kissed beaches and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The shallow, clear waters and crested waves attract spirited bottlenose dolphins all year round, while the ocean comes alive with whales when they undertake their annual migration to Mozambique.

Soak up the sun on Willard Beach, bury your feet in golden sand and rest assured that your safety is taken care of thanks to protective shark nets and life guards. The waves beckon surfers and body boarders while a 15min walk south brings you to Clarke Bay’s rock pools and their dark cerulean waters. Further south, Ballito Point’s tidal pool is full of new life from parrotfish to surgeonfish that dart between rocks while nudibranchs cling to the rocky wall.

Ballito’s coastline offers plenty of fishing spots while inland the Holla Mountain Bike and sugar cane trails are waiting to be explored. For hiking trails and wildlife viewing, visit the Harold Johnson nature reserve on the banks of the Tugela River. Zebra can be seen grazing among the trees while vervet monkeys cavort in the canopy above.
