Laid-back living on Kruger’s doorstep

Perpetual warmth beams down on this sunny and laid-back town where, amid rolling sugar-cane fields and tropical fruit orchards, life's daily pace takes a decided shift and drifts into the slow lane. Malelane trades the fast-paced rat race with slow-moving seclusion. The farming town gazes over the Crocodile River and its wildlife; offering up a small taster of what is still to come in the nearby Kruger National Park.

The Malelane Gate is one of the iconic park’s main entrances and is guarded by browsers such as giraffe, kudu, and duiker. The density and diversity of animals in Kruger is unparalleled in South Africa. It is also largely considered to be one of Africa’s flagship conservation areas. All big game are present – elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino – along with 137 other mammals, and over 500 different species of bird.

Apart from traditional Game Drives, safari-goers can traverse the varying terrain on foot. Watch the land morph from extensive bushveld dotted by granite hills and rising mountains, to the tropical forests found scattered around the north. Retreat from the wilderness for a few rounds at a nine-hole golf course or follow the main road – the N4 – to Komatipoort for some tiger fishing and elephant-back safaris.
