Beaufort West

The heart of the Karoo

With an almost unnaturally blue sky, a seemingly endless horizon and a serenity that comes with a silence so palpable that you can almost touch it, Beaufort West is truly the heart of the Karoo. Flanked by undulating hills in the south and the Nuweveld Mountains in the north, Beaufort West is a town steeped in history.

Beaufort West showcases elegant Georgian, Victorian, and classic Cape Dutch style architecture alongside quaint cottages that have become emblematic of the Karoo. Visitors can relive history in the town’s museum, fashioned from the old Dutch Reformed Mission Church. Just next door, travellers can venture into the humble childhood home of heart-transplant pioneer, Chris Barnard, whose ashes have been interred in the manicured gardens.

Venture to the outskirts of Beaufort West where the 75,000 hectare Karoo National Park is home to rare wildlife and deciduous vegetation. Visitors can observe grazing eland, kudu, springbok and red hartebeest or try spot the whiffle-nosed elephant shrew fine-combing the area for lizard eggs. Visitors can enjoy guided game drives, walks, picnics and 4X4 eco-trails in the park.
