Escape to Gauteng’s magical mountains

Magaliesberg is a mecca for nature-lovers and adventurers alike. Rich in biodiversity and geology, this 2,300-million-year-old mountain range lies less than an hour’s drive from the hubbub of Johannesburg. Here you’ll find an abundance of valleys, ravines, cliffs, and waterfalls that sustains a variety of habitats - from bushveld savannah to grasslands and forested kloofs.

Tackle the Magaliesberg Mountain Range on foot or by bike. These mountains were once home to roaming giraffe, buffalo, rhino, elephants, large cats, and a range of different antelope - but now only smaller species such as polecat, bushbaby, duiker, porcupine, vervet monkey, and more can be seen among the cliffs and waterfalls. Larger wildlife can be spooted in the nature reserves. The mountain area is also a birder’s delight with over 300 different bird species including the exquisite paradise flycatcher. Witness cape vultures nest in cliffside colonies while jackal buzzard, falcon, and black eagle soar above.

The small town of Magaliesburg at the foot of the mountains is accommodating and easy accessible. There are numerous airport shuttles that can make the quick trip to this little hideaway. The route to this town takes you through endearing countryside of Mulderdrift and past the Cradle of Humankind, a definite attraction worth visiting. Other enticing activities include abseiling, horse riding, white-water rafting, hot-air ballooning, and micro-lighting.
