A timeless fishing-village retreat

While taking a stroll around the idyllic coastal village of Arniston, travellers will be forgiven for being a tad confused by the signage. This town actually goes by many names: Arniston (after the ship that wrecked off its coastline in 1815), Waenhuiskrans (after the freshwater caves near the ocean), and Kassiesbaai (in reference to the fishing village it encompasses).

Known for its distinctive white-washed walls and thatched-roof fishing cottages - a style that has since been adopted by many of the guesthouses in the area – the hamlet is now a flourishing tourist spot. Plus: it’s ideally located two-and-a-half hours from Cape Town. Travellers can have a traditional dinner in Kassiesbaai in the home of a local fisherman or grab a freshly-caught bite at restaurants in town.

Visitors can also spend their days on the beach: swimming, fishing, snorkelling, and Surfing or enjoying nature trails to the Waenhuiskrans caves. Whale and bird-watching are prolific here at the right time of year, while Hiking and sandboarding on the nearby dunes are increasingly popular. Attractions nearby include the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas and the town of Bredasdorp featuring a 9-hole golf course. Arniston is the perfect getaway from the city and an ideal stopover along the Whale Route.
